How I Survive Cancer

By surrounding myself with the people I love and the things that I enjoy.

And by getting involved in the Carcinoid community.  Although this is a rare form of cancer, it has been nice finding out that I am not alone.  The friends that I have made and the other survivors that I have met along the way, have added a great deal of joy and purpose to my life.

Additionally, I have a website that I post to weekly.  My online journal - my blog:

http://www.mycarcinoidstory.com/

I started this website to share with friends and family my journey and fight with Carcinoid.  I wanted it to be out there to help raise awareness in the hopes that someone else might perhaps be diagnosed sooner, or so that funds can be raised to help find a cure.  It has given me a new purpose and an answer for the question:  "Why me?"

In the fall of 2007, I underwent 2 radioembolization treatments using the Yttrium 90 Theraspheres.  The procedures were performed at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL and so far, I've been very pleased with the results.  Please contact me if you would want more information on this, as I'd love to share my experience.

How I Fight for a Cure

By spreading the word and raising awareness for this rare form of cancer.  It didn't take long for me to realize that many people have not heard of Carcinoid Cancer and the importance of raising money for research to help find a cure.

Since my diagnosis, I have not only shared my journey with others on my blog, I have given a speech at a Carcinoid fundraising event and participated in my first mini-marathon (where I wore my own specially-designed t-shirt raising awareness for Carcinoid).

My goal is to inspire others into action - whether it be donating money or time to the cause, or by raising funds on their own.  Just look at my brother Josh!  www.firstgiving.com/joshhouston

My Caring Words of Encouragement

Surround yourself with strong people - people that support you, encourage you, make you laugh, and give you a reason to face each day.

Without my network of real-life angels, I wouldn't be here today.  My oncologist thought I might not make it through my first summer of treatments.  And when I weighed only 95lbs, my loved ones began to worry.  But there was no doubt in my mind that I would beat this disease.  It is for them that I keep on fighting.

Update: Summer and Fall 2009.
